Tuesday 18th April 2017 – The art of cleansing

After a long Easter/Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK, some of us may only be too familiar with feeling below par, usually after overdoing it.  This could be from eating too many chocolate Easter eggs, drinking too much, doing too much!

Our systems can become a little ‘clogged up’ with the external environmental pollutants, the legacy of living a stressful lifestyle and having a poor diet.

Just as our skin needs regular cleansing, so does out physical bodies through exercise as does our insides, through what we eat.  If we don’t cleanse then toxins start to build up and can eventually start to cause unwanted illnesses, pains, feelings etc.  The body routinely gets rid of waste routinely however we cannot scrub out our insides, we simply need to adopt some healthy practices to help cleanse our tissues and organs as well as our minds.

So today I wanted to share with you some very helpful and useful tips as to how we can all cleanse the body and mind naturally and simply.  Here goes:

  1. Walking, movement, exercise:  I swear by this.  Over the past 3 months I have been conscious to get out and about and do my minimum of 10,000 steps using my FitBit and have noticed the benefit it has both on my body physically (feeling more flexible and toned) as well as mentally (energetically recharged).
  2. Fresh air:  this links heavily with my point above – walking.  As we go out in nature and enjoy the freshness of the air that surrounds us and the oxygen it provides us, this benefits not only our lungs, keeping it healthy and working efficiently, it also keeps are heart working well, pumping the blood it needs around it naturally.
  3. Eating:  eating the right foods nourishes the body and provides it with the right nutrients it needs to function effectively.  We all know that when we overeat, especially fatty and sugary foods, the effect it has on the body is to make us feel groggy, sleepy, heavy and inactive.  However swap these with natural un-processed foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh juices, healthy sugars such as dates, sweet potato, wholegrain (beans, lentils and brown rice) and you will start to benefit from the positive impact it will have on your body.
  4. Drinking water:  the body needs to keep hydrated at all times.  Some signs to look out for when we are not drinking enough water are: dry lips/mouth, headaches/head pressure and tiredness.  I drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day in addition to my daily fresh juice and about 4 cups of herbal/green tea.
  5. Tea:  in this case I am referring to herbal tea and more specifically green tea.  A simple daily routine of drinking green tea, especially before any large meal, can put a bounce in your day and a sparkle in your eyes.  This is an easy and natural way to keep healthy and balanced amongst many other nutritional benefits this tea has.  My favourite tea is called ‘Genmaicha‘ which is a blend of green tea and roasted brown rice – it is so delicious.  You can find this at any good health food shop or online.
  6. Mindfulness:  this simply means the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something, giving a specific activity your full attention.  For example, when it comes to food, it is good to pay attention to how you prepare food, how you cook it, how you eat and more importantly chewing the food to aid good digestion.  When we mind-lessly eat, for example, in front of the tv or deep in conversation, the focus and attention on the food is simply not there which could lead to us overeating or not even noticing what we have eaten!  So pay attention to the whole ‘cooking through to eating process’ next time you are in the kitchen!
  7. Meditation:  meditation is a form of quietening the mind away from the day to day activities and thoughts.  It is giving the mind a chance to become quiet, clear the mind or simply reflect on a certain inspirational thought, recharge and energise ready to face the next segment of life with more clarity.  As a newcomer to meditation it is nice to find a meditation commentary where someone will play music and talk and guide you into that sense of relaxation and calm.  There are many tools online to help you along this journey.  I personally practice this a few times throughout the day – more focused first thing in the morning and evening, playing instrumental music in the background where available and then at regular intervals throughout the day to simply take a moment out to give thanks and gratitude.

 

Genmaicha: green tea and roasted brown rice

So in view of todays topic and keeping things light, I have made a delicious filling and nutritious soup and wanted to share the recipe with you.  It takes 5 minutes to prepare, 20 minutes to cook and a few minutes to blend and it is all done and ready in 30 minutes – no fuss!

Cauliflower Corn Chowder (GF & VEGAN)

1 cauliflower, cut into medium size pieces
1 medium white/sweet potato (your choice), cut into medium size pieces
4 stalks celery with leaves, sliced
1 large carrot, sliced
1 can coconut milk
Salt & pepper to taste
If you like it spice, add 1/8th tsp of chilli flakes or a small piece of fresh red chilli
6-8 cups of freshly boiled water

Instructions

Saute all the vegetables (except cauliflower) in 1 tbsp of coconut milk/cream from top of tin) for 5 minutes

Add the cauliflower and water and simmer on medium heat for 20 minutes, until all veg are tender

Add the rest of the coconut milk and blend mixture until smooth

Add black pepper and a small can/1 cup of sweet corn and serve

This soup is so delicious and creamy and full of goodness and quick and easy to make.  Try it and let me know how you get on!
